Jane Austen

Introduction

Jane Austen was born in 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, England, to Reverend George Austen and Cassandra Austen (née Leigh). She was the eighth of ten children and grew up in a wealthy family with her older brothers James, Edward, Henry, Francis, and Mary. Jane's education began at home where she learned to read and write. In 1796, she moved to Chawton Cottage with her sister Cassandra.

At the age of twenty-five, Jane Austen published her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, in 1811, which was a moderate success. However, it wasn't until the publication of Pride and Prejudice in 1813 that she gained widespread recognition as a writer. The novel's popularity led to Austen writing several other novels, including Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), Northanger Abbey (published posthumously in 1818), and Persuasion (published posthumously in 1817).
